What is a FibroScan?
Starhope Liver Center uses Fibroscan as a non-invasive, painless, ultrasound-based imaging tool to evaluate liver stiffness, fatty change and scarring of the liver. The procedure is done after at least a 3hr fasting and takes about 10 minutes. Results can be provided during the clinic visit. Fibroscan is approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to diagnose liver diseases.
Who Would Benefit from a FibroScan?
Patients with one or more of the following risk factors are at a higher risk for developing fatty liver disease, which often lacks symptoms, making these risk factors crucial for screening:
- Obesity
- Diabetes
- Metabolic Syndrome
- Age over 50
- High Cholesterol
- Hypertension
- Hispanic ethnicity
- BMI over 30
Why is FibroScan Done?
When other tests suggest liver dysfunction, your doctor may recommend a FibroScan for a more precise evaluation. Unlike a liver biopsy, a FibroScan is quick, painless, and performed in a clinic setting. It helps:
- Determine the amount of fat in the liver
- Assess the degree of fibrosis and/or cirrhosis (scarring)
How is FibroScan Performed?
The procedure is straightforward. You will lie on your back with your right arm raised behind your head. The technician will apply a water-based gel to your skin on the right side at the rib cage and then use a probe with slight pressure. The exam involves ten consecutive measurements at the same location and is not painful.
What Happens After a FibroScan?
After the exam, you can resume eating, drinking, and your usual activities immediately. There is no downtime or recovery period needed. A study investigator or physician will interpret the FibroScan report, review the results with you, and provide personalized lifestyle recommendations to follow up with your primary care provider.
How to Prepare for a FibroScan
You should not eat or drink anything for three hours before the test.
